Founding member of Clannad Noel Duggan has died

It's been announced that founding member of legendary Irish band Clannad Noel Duggan has died.

The death was made public on the band's twitter account.

The tweet stated: "We are heartbroken to share the news that Noel Duggan, our beloved Uncle, trusted friend, and founding member of Clannad, died suddenly in Donegal yesterday evening. He was 73 years old."

In a follow-up tweet, Clannad added: "Noel will be forever remembered for his outstanding guitar solos, his love of music and his dedication to the band.

"Tá muid croíbhriste faoi bhás Noel. Uncail, cara, agus ceoltóir iontach. Ar dheis Dé a raibh a h'anam uasal. Máire, Ciarán & Pól RIP - Nollaig Dílís."

Clannad was formed in 1970 in Gaoth Dobhair, Co Donegal by siblings Ciarán, Pól, and Moya Brennan and their twin uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan.

They adopted various musical styles throughout their history, including folk, folk rock, traditional Irish, Celtic and new-age music.

Their international breakthrough came in 1982 when their theme song for the Yorkshire TV mini-series, Harry's Game became a massive hit in several countries.

It's been reported that 73-year-old Duggan had been out with friends on Saturday when he took ill and suddenly passed away.
