Pierce Brosnan has said playing the role of a superhero was the last thing on his mind despite previously auditioning for Tim Burton's Batman, years prior, with no success.

Speaking on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, the Golden Eye actor said: "I didn't expect this, yeah I really was, it was the last thing on my mind to be playing a superhero like Doctor Fate.

"I mean, I went up for Batman, way back in the day when Tim Burton was doing it. Obviously, I didn't get the job.

"But I remember saying something stupid to Tim Burton. Like, I said, you know, I can't understand, any man who would wear his underpants outside his trousers.

"And so it's just there you go the best man got the job and you know Doctor Fate and I were meant to meet on the same page I think."

Asked if he can see anything with the Doctor Fate mask, the Mamma Mia actor said: " No. Everyone wants to know what it was like putting on the costume, what it was like putting on the helmet.

"You know you can't see a thing, it's darkness.

"There was this stylish gorgeous-looking sleek helmet and then there was one that I actually could put on.

"But of course, you are standing there in a mocap suit, a motion capture suit, which is the most inelegant and kind of humorous thing to wear. Ping pong balls, grey tights, you know, you got a have a sense of humour.

"But I remember Jaume Collet-Serra the director, he said there was a point where I had to find this crown and he said, I'm standing there and I'm giving it my best heroic acting and he said ok put the helmet on, I said don't worry I can see it, its right there.

"I put it on, of course, I couldn’t see anything.

"Anyway, it was good fun to do it was a lovely company of actors."

Black Adam is in cinemas Friday 21 October.
