U2 frontman Bono has discussed his relationship with his wife of 40 years, Ali Hewson, and said "when you have romantic love and friendship, that's really something special."
In an interview for the New Yorker Festival for his upcoming book, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, the 62-year-old singer was asked how he has maintained his four-decade union with the 61-year-old businesswoman.
"It is a grand madness about us," Bono shared, as quoted by People magazine. "And there's something about knowing that you're going against the odds," he said.

He added: "But I would say if you ask me seriously, friendship can outpace romantic love, sometimes. And friendship is what myself and Ali have. When you have romantic love and friendship, that’s really something special."
The Grammy-winning rocker and Hewson walked down the aisle in 1982 and share four children: Jordan (33), Eve (31), Elijah (23) and John (21).

Bono previously spoke about his marriage on The Ellen DeGeneres Show as his 40th anniversary approached and said he still has "a lot to learn" about his wife.
"She's hard to know...She’s a mysterious figure," he explained. "There’s a lot to learn about her still. And we’re still finding out more and more about each other. Most of it’s good."

Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story is set for release on November 1.
