Behind the music - Sarah Buckley

Sarah Buckley
Sarah Buckley

Cork alt-folk singer songwriter Sarah Buckley has released her new song, Magic Powers. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Speaking about the song, she says, "On the move a lot at the time, Magic Powers is about meeting someone that made you feel you could stand still following a restless period.

"It talks about how the company of the right person can make the mundane seem special and the tricky parts of life more manageable."

Sarah has collaborated and recorded with some of Ireland's leading music producers, Karl Odlum (David Kitt, Gemma Hayes), Darragh Nolan (Ailbhe Reddy) and Richey McCourt (LAOISE, Will Young) over the past year.

The results of this will be released as two sister EPs in the coming months, which "balance themes of nature and mysticism".

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Cork-born, currently listening to Adam Buxton podcast and doing the artist way programme by Julia Cameron with a group of songwriters.

How would you describe your music?

I describe myself as an indie folk singer songwriter. When I started, I wouldn't have known what that meant but now as I progressed I feel like that's where I fit!

Who are your musical inspirations?

It changes as I develop my own music, but I have a particular interest in lyrics so always go back to Leonard Cohen, Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys, Last Shadow Puppets) and Matt Berninger (The National).

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Niall Connolly is a singer songwriter from Cork, and I went to see one of his gigs. I didn't play or know much about music at the time and just went because friends were going but ended up loving it.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I'd imagine a lot of people are influenced by what their parents were listening to, and I was no different. They liked Gilbert O Sullivan, Abba, Blondie, but when they put Patsy Cline on, I was hooked and got my own album of hers. Probably because I could sing along to those songs, they are in a natural key for me and because the cover of the compilation was pink.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Julia Jacklin just released a great album so this week maybe the closing track on that End of a Friendship or else Change from Big Thief’s last album.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"Who but you would take me in a thousand kisses deep" is a line from Leonard Cohen that I love. He has it as both a song and a poem and I was lucky enough to see him recite it live when he played in Dublin, it always stuck with me

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

If I like a song, I always listen to it on repeat anyway but a song that I come back to again and again over the years is Pink Rabbits by The National.

Where can people find your music/more information?

I have a website, mailing list, Facebook and Instagram with new music coming out across Spotify, YouTube etc in the coming weeks.
