Montreal-based seven-piece Japanese psych rock band TEKE::TEKE play Ireland for the first time this week. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
They play the Grand Social, Dublin on 8 September, Clonakilty Guitar Festival, Clonakilty on 9 September, Kenny's Pub, Lahinch on September 10 and The Mick Lally Theatre, Galway on 11 September.
Teke::Teke formed for what was supposed to be a one-off tribute performance to honour the Japanese guitarist Takeshi "Terry" Terauchi and then morphed into a fully-fledged band.
Their new album Shirushi is out now on Kill Rock Stars and has been acclaimed by Mojo, Uncut and Wire magazines and, of course, BrooklynVegan.
Tell us three things about yourself?
We're a seven-piece rock band from Montreal who started in 2017 as a tribute to guitarist Takeshi Terauchi.
How would you describe your music?
We think it's a blend of experimental art-rock, with Japanese-Bulgarian-French-Brazilian influences, a cinematic drive and punk energy.
Who are your musical inspirations?
They are endless. Takeshi Terauchi, Nakajima Miyuki, Asakawa Maki, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Chakra (from Japan), Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Os Mutantes, Quarteto Em Cy, Vangelis, Ennio Morricone, J Dilla, Unwound . . .
What was the first gig you ever went to?
A Canadian punk band who were called S.C.U.M. The show was all ages and took place in the gymnasium of a neighbourhood school.
What was the first record you ever bought?
The first album I bought with my own money was a cassette-tape of Nevermind The Bollocks by The Sex Pistols. I was just a kid, bought it in a store at a mall and got jumped in the parking lot by a bunch of older kids who stole the cassette from me.
What's your favourite song right now?
Third Stream by Montreal band SUUNS. It's been my favourite song for quite a while now.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Seriously, nothing comes to mind right now, sorry. I'd have to think forever.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come.
