Iconic BBC quiz show Mastermind will celebrate its 50th birthday on 11 September and returns this month for a new series.

Created by Bill Wright, Mastermind first aired on 11 September 1972. The first series was won by Nancy Wilkinson, a 53-year-old lecturer from Cambridgeshire.

In the new series, host Clive Myrie will be putting the questions to 96 hopefuls as they bid to become Mastermind Champion in the show's golden anniversary season.

"The specialist subjects are as eclectic as ever, ranging from Professor Stephen Hawking, Toy Dog breeds and guest stars in the sitcom Friends, to the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, Shakespeare's comedies and the Great Fire of London," said the BBC.

"As a kid growing up watching Mastermind, I could never have imagined hosting this most iconic of quiz shows, in its 50th anniversary year," said Myrie.

"Its enduring appeal is down to its simplicity; a test of knowledge against the clock. Riveting and entertaining, it is still Britain's toughest quiz. Happy Birthday, Mastermind."
