Michael Flatley says his "mother would have loved" his debut movie Blackbird

The long-awaited Irish premiere of Michael Flatley's movie Blackbird took place in Dublin on Wednesday with the Irish dance star dedicating the screening to his late mother Eilish Flatley.

The spy thriller, which has been shrouded in secrecy until recently, tells the story of Victor Blackley (Flatley), an ex-M16 operative who is pulled back into the world he left when an agent connected to his past turns up at his place of business in Barbados.

The film was screened at the Monaco Streaming Film Festival in 2021 where Flatley picked up the Best Actor award for his role.

Speaking to RTÉ on the red carpet at the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin on Wednesday Flatley said: "I think my mother would have loved it and that's most important to me. This is for my mom tonight."

Making a movie is a major departure for a man most famous for his work as a dancer but Flatley said he's proud of Blackbird and hopes audiences enjoy it.

He added: "It was an interesting story, more of love story really than anything else. As you will see the guy has a lot of pain and has to fight a lot of demons to get through. It's an interesting story, but it is not James Bond."

Blackbird is in cinemas nationwide from Friday, 2 September.
