South African actress Charlbi Dean, who appeared in Palme d'Or winning film Triangle of Sadness, has died at the age of 32.

Dean's representatives said her death in hospital from a sudden unexpected illness was "devastating".

Dean co-starred alongside Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson in Swedish director Ruben Ostlund's Triangle of Sadness.

The film is a biting social satire that sees models and the ultra-rich have their status undermined by unexpected events. It is set to be released in October and also expected to be in the 2023 Oscar running.

It also won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year.

Speaking about the film before it was crowned at Cannes in May, she told the Associated Press: "For me, I'm like, I've already won. I'm already at Cannes with the movie. That's so unbelievable. Anything is just a cherry on top at this point for me."

Dean was born on 5 February 1990, in Cape Town, South Africa.

Before her turn in Triangle of Sadness, she was best known for playing Syonide in the DC Comics-based series Black Lightning.

She also appeared in Spud (2010), Don't Sleep (2017) Blood in the Water (2016), Don't Sleep (2017, and Porthole (2018)
