Chxmist, the project of Dublin-based producer Conor Barry, had released Fevered, the first track from his debut EP. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Previously a producer for acclaimed Dublin rapper Fynch's Bookies Pens and Loose Ends, chxmist has released two well-received tracks, Waiting for You feat. Anna Mooney and a remix of Toygirl’s Moonlight Velvet.

The project started during 2020 as a selection of ambient pieces documenting the isolation and loneliness experienced during the first national lockdown.

This evolved into a signature combination of choppy drums and atmospheric soundscapes. Releasing on Faction Music's Lost Decay imprint, chxmist’s latest project Reunion focuses on the return to life, reuniting friends, family and dancefloors in a return to normality.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Believe it or not, I actually am a chemist. My vocabulary is almost entirely composed of Shrek quotes and I've a serious chocolate addiction.

How would you describe your music?

My music sounds like a drummer tried to make ambient electronic music . . . and got it very wrong. I mix big ambient soundscapes with choppy, energetic percussion. I'd love to think people could both sleep and dance to my tunes, preferably not at the same time.

Who are your musical inspirations?

A virtuosic CD player throughout my life, my dad is a huge inspiration to me. He constantly provides musical rabbit holes for me to dive down, and to think outside the box. I also lap up anything by Fred Again and Jamie XX. They constantly blow my tiny musical brain and inspire me to add my personality to my music, unapologetically.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

My dad brought me to the Horslips’ return tour in 2009. I can still see him head banging to Dearg Doom.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Insomniac by Enrique Inglesias. I am unironically proud of that one, cracking album.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I'm rinsing Turn on the Lights Again, Fred Again's remix with Swedish House Mafia and Future at the moment. It's such a ridiculous tune, that's the only way I can describe it: the bass is ridiculous, the synth slowdown in the second drop is ridiculous, the energy is absolutely ridiculous.

Favourite lyric of all time?

I’ve always adored the second verse of Sufjan Stevens’ Death with Dignity: "Somewhere in the desert there's a forest, and an acre before us, But I don't know where to begin, But I don't know where to begin, Again, I lost my strength completely, oh be near me tired old mare, With the wind in your hair". I think that whole album is beautiful lyrically and really encapsulates loss. Hope ye didn’t expect a happy lyric!

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A 1000 Times by Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam. Could never get sick of that song, perfect nostalgia.

Where can people find your music/more information?

Socials wise I am most active on Instagram (@chxmist.dxblin) and my music is available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer.
