Paralympic champion and broadcaster Ellie Simmonds is the sixth celebrity contestant taking part in this year's Strictly Come Dancing, the BBC has announced.

The legendary swimmer joins comedian Jayde Adams, Loose Women panellist Kaye Adams, presenter and actress Kym Marsh, actor Will Mellor and broadcaster Richie Anderson in the line-up for the 20th season of Strictly on BBC One. More contestants will be announced in the coming days.

Commenting on signing up for the show, the five-time Paralympic gold medallist said she is "literally bursting with excitement".

"I'm a tad nervous too, well more than a tad... I'm absolutely petrified!" she continued.

"To be asked to be part of the Strictly family is just so exciting and I cannot wait. It's going to be so much fun.

"I'm counting down the minutes until it starts; learning to dance, meeting my partner and everyone else involved in the show. Plus, wearing the sequins and all that. It's going to be a blast.

"I've been watching Strictly from as far back as I can remember; it's a traditional lead-up to Christmas with my family and it's a genuine privilege to be part of it."

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One in the autumn.
