Free Gaff returns to the RTÉ Player for a hilarious second series, and the first episode is a whopper

Fresh from the resounding success of series one, Darren & Joe's Free Gaff returns to the RTÉ Player for a second series. Securing the title of being the most successful RTÉ Player original series in 2021, the new series, which is proudly sponsored by Burger King, is set to delight and potentially nab the same title for 2022.

Comedians Darren Conway and Joseph McGucken are back in their shared gaff which houses their surreal, experimental and wacky comedy series centred around two best friends who live together in Dublin, joined by some familiar faces along the way.

Comedians Darren Conway and Joseph McGucken are back in their shared gaff.

Last series, we saw Irish comedians Jen Hatton, Killian Sundermann, Justine Stafford and Tony Cantwell joining the guys on their adventures, but who’s set to arrive in this exciting new series of Free Gaff?

The first episode of the new series begins with the boys debating the suitability of their brand new television set, and whether its size (a modest 4.5 inches) is big enough for the room. Interrupting the heated discussion, Joe astutely points out that the winning lottery numbers always seem to be higher figures, and that the winner is never from Dublin. In one simple interaction, it’s clear that Free Gaff is back on form for the new series, continuing the trend of hilarious observational sketch comedy and thought-provoking humour.

Meanwhile in the kitchen, Darren’s trying out a new recipe for carrots that he happened upon on TikTok, but will he be able to pull off the complicated technique without a hitch? Of course not. But it’s worth seeing how badly he manages to screw it up. Spoiler: It’s bad.

Joe then takes us on the dramatic journey of how he managed to get the carrots in the supermarket, which involves Darren showing off his freshly-whitened teeth and detailing plans of his upcoming trip to Turkey for "a top-up". He extends an invite to Joe to join him on the trip for some bonding (of the composite variety), but will he go along for the ride, or gracefully bow out and succumb to his "big yellow teeth"?

The aftermath of Darren’s experimental carrot-cooking sees their landlord in turmoil, as her endeavours to sell the house for "eight times the asking price" seem to be in jeopardy as a result. Comedian Anna Clifford stars as the money-hungry landlord, who’s keen to let the boys know that "it’s common decency not to burn someone’s house to the ground". But in fairness to Darren and Joe, not everyone learned that in school.

Anna proves the perfect accompaniment to Darren and Joe's humour, giving a terrific performance as a villain.

The trio take a trip back through time to examine how landlord and tenant relations were in the year 5000 BC, and aside from a very specific 'no dinosaurs’ rule, the boys learn that landlords have always been after their tenants’ hard-earned berries. Anna proves the perfect accompaniment to Darren and Joe’s humour, giving a terrific performance as a villain.

Investigating whether Darren is cursed as a result of the cooking mishap, the lads have a debate over the relevance of saluting a magpie. They conduct an experiment with a flock of magpies, but will they live up to their name as a mischief? If the cohabitants’ common trend of misfortune is anything to go by, you can probably guess the rest.

Will the lads be able to deal with the aftermath of Joe’s TikTok carrot-cooking technique and change the landlord’s mind when it comes to evicting them? Will series two live up to the hype of series one? Will Joe head to Turkey for some composite bonding? You’ll have to watch to find out.
