Dublin folk rock artist Tony Tyrrell has released Mockingbird, the final single from debut album, Conviction. We asked him the BIG questions . . .
The song was recorded and produced by Tommy McLaughlin (SOAK, Villagers, Pillow Queens) in Attica Studios and speaking about the track, he says: "This one is personal, reflecting a life experience that struck a chord.
"The sweep and depth of the production captures the sort of all-enveloping feeling I had - the song has a relentless drive towards an inevitable end."
Tony was a founding member of The Afternoons, whose 2001 album, Homage, was nominated for best album in the Choice Music Awards.
Conviction is out on 12 August.
Tell us three things about yourself?
I'm a classically trained clarinettist turned sax player turned songwriter. The band I played with during the 1990s once supported Stiff Little Fingers at the Irish stage at the Midem Festival in Cannes, France. I live in Malahide, Co. Dublin.
How would you describe your music?
It's always hard to categorise your own work but I think classic singer-songwriter in the folk/folk rock idiom with a touch of adult contemporary is close enough.
Who are your musical inspirations?
So many but the most important is Bob Dylan followed closely by The Beatles. But there are so many others ranging from Elvis Costello to Ron Sexsmith, John Martyn, Radiohead, Damien Rice, Arcade Fire. I also listen to a lot of classical and jazz music.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
I saw Horslips play one New Year's Eve at a place called Red Island in Skerries. That was my first gig and it was brilliant.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.
What's your favourite song right now?
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart by Wilco.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face" - Visions of Johanna by Bob Dylan.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
While My Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles.
