British-Irish girl group Melladaze have released their new single, I Love Ya. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
Aisli, Ellie, Megan, Lauren and Liv first met on BBC One talent show Little Mix: The Search in 2020 and I Love Ya is their second single, following their debut track, I H8 U, from their upcoming their debut EP.
"I Love Ya is basically about finding your ride-or-die lover," they say. "It was inspired by that fresh feeling when you're falling in love with someone and it just feels so natural - the honeymoon period.
"We worked so hard on the vocals and the harmonies, but it was fun and easy to write as some of us are very much living the song's lyrics at the moment!"
After doing well on Little Mix: The Search in 2020, the band decided to stay together - even though they all live in different cities.
"Megan and Aisli are living in Dublin; Ellie is in Bournemouth, Lauren in Croydon, and Liv in Essex," they say. "But we’re hoping to all relocate to London soon."
Tell us three things about yourself?
We are a five-piece girlband, two of us are based in Dublin and three of us are based in the UK and we met each other for the first time when we were formed on the TV show Little Mix The Search.
How would you describe your music?
We think of our music as very poppy but with a cooler undertone! We’re definitely inspired by songs that have a summery vibe to it, pop instruments like synths, we love UK rap beats, and also Afro rhythms. We each love a variety of different artists and love to take inspiration from different genres to make it our own! We feel our songs are quite relatable and suitable to a lot of people around our ages as well as beyond that.
Who are your musical inspirations?
We each have so many musical inspirations that we love, but some of our main ones that we have in common the likes of Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Pia Mia, Dua Lipa and Zara Larsson to name a few. We also all obviously grew up listening and looking up to Little Mix of course! As you can see, we definitely look up to a lot of strong and powerful Women in the music world and take a lot of inspiration from them; we love girl-power!
What was the first gig you ever went to?
We’ve seen loads of artists perform over the years between us, but one thing we all have in common is that either Little Mix or JLS was one of the first concerts each of us ever went to! We all grew up as dancers and singers from a young age so the concerts were an amazing opportunity to see such incredible performers!! They were deffo top of all of our lists.
What was the first record you ever bought?
We each grew up always constantly listening to music, probably due to our parents love for music! Mariah Carey was definitely a favourite, also Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé etc. Those were definitely some of the powerhouse names each of us can remember dancing around to as one of our first CDs!
What's your favourite song right now?
At the moment we are loving a bit of Drake’s new album! Such summer vibes which we love, as well as Aitch’s song Baby (that’s one of our faves - can always catch us singing along to him in the car together!) Of course, along with our newest song, I Love Ya!
Favourite lyric of all time?
A Lyric that sticks with all of us is probably "Nothing comes between us" from Between Us by Little Mix. It’s so relatable for us because as females we need to work together and support each other especially in this industry. As a girl group we have to stick together and look out for each other. Also, we want to show other young girls that they too can follow and be successful in their dreams and support each other! A lot of little mix songs have great, girl power inspired lyrics which we love, and aspire to be like.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
It would have to be Pia Mia’s song Hot! It’s one of the first songs we ever danced to together so it holds such good memories! It’s very Mella vibes too!
