Kelsey Grammer has said that he cried while reading the script for the upcoming revival of beloved nineties sitcom Frasier.

Grammar (67) said the show's writers are "in the final stages of the final script for the first episode of the Frasier reboot and it looks pretty good.

"I’ve had a couple of runs through it, and I cried, so you know, I’m happy."

Giving an update on the revival, the Emmy-winning star said there had been discussions about filming starting later this year, adding that "there are a couple of other things coming up, we’ve developed a couple of other projects that look like they’re going to shoot first."

Cheers spin-off Frasier ran for 11 seasons between 1993 and 2004 and last year Paramount+ announced plans to bring it back.

However, apart from Grammar, who won four Emmys for his performance as Dr Frasier Crane, several of the show's key characters will not be back for the reboot.

John Mahoney, who played Frasier and brother Niles’ father, retired Seattle cop Martin, passed away in 2018, while David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles, said earlier this year he's "certainly interested" in the revival, but has not confirmed if he will appear.

Jane Leeves, who played physical therapist Daphne Moon, has already said that her commitment to medical drama The Resident means that she will not be able to take part in the revival.

Talking about the Frasier comeback last year, Grammer said Dr. Crane would leave Seattle and relocate to another city.

"He thinks he’s gonna go off and do one thing, and sure enough, his life takes him in another direction, and he ends up rich beyond his dreams," he hinted.

Speaking after last year's announcement of the Frasier comeback, he said, "Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I'd like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world,"

"I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr Frasier Crane."

Grammer has played Frasier in three series: Cheers, Wings and the character's titular show. He also directed over 30 episodes of Frasier. The series is available on the RTÉ Player.
