For starters there’s this classic found-footage horror film produced, written, directed, photographed and edited by Oren Peli.

It centres on a young couple (played by Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) who are on the receiving end of a supernatural presence in their home.

They decide to set up a camera to document the haunting and the film makes great use of found-footage conventions that were mirrored in the later - and inferior - films of the series.

Originally developed as an independent feature and given film festival screenings in 2007, the film was shot for just $15,000, which wouldn’t cover a day’s catering on most Hollywood productions.

It was then acquired by Paramount Pictures and modified, particularly with a new ending that cost an additional $200,000. It went on to earn nearly $200m at the box office.

Joan of Arc, 10.40pm, BBC Four

Bit of an Ingrid Bergman night here, centred by a rare screening of a multi-Oscar-nominated but ponderously paced historical drama adapted from Maxwell Anderson's stage play.

Bergman and Bogey

Starring Bergman, Jose Ferrer and George Coulouris, it charts the last battle undertaken by the medieval heroine of Orleans, played – of course – by the Swedish superstar.

Followed at 10.40pm by Parkinson Interviews Ingrid Bergman. Also preceded at 9.00pm by the Bergman/Bogart classic Casablanca.
