Comedian, presenter and actor Matt Lucas (below) had an exceptionally close bond with his late grandmother, Margot, who came to the UK in 1939 as a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany.
Lucas has never fully understood what Margot experienced as a young woman in Berlin in the lead up to the Second World War - or what became of the extended family she left behind.
His poignant journey takes him to Berlin, and then to Amsterdam where he discovers an extraordinary connection to Anne Frank, as well as the fate of his many family members who had fled to Holland, which was later was invaded by the Germans.
The Color Purple, 9.00pm, BBC Four
Steven Spielberg's drama, based on Alice Walker's novel, made an international star of Whoopi Goldberg (below), and also stars Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery and Willard E Pugh.
A much-abused black woman is separated from her children and her sister, and doomed to a life of virtual slavery at the hands of her brutish new husband on an impoverished farm in rural Georgia.
Preceded at 8pm by Whoopi Goldberg: More Dawn French’s Girls Who Do Comedy, where Goldberg discusses her childhood, the years she spent on the street experimenting with life and drugs and how these experiences shaped her comedy.

Navalny, 10.15pm, RTÉ One
In August 2020, a plane travelling from Siberia to Moscow made an emergency landing. One of its passengers, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, was deathly ill.
Taken to a local Siberian hospital and eventually evacuated to Berlin, doctors there confirmed that he had been poisoned with Novichok, a nerve agent implicated in attacks on other opponents of the Russian government.
This documentary follows Navalny and his team as they unravel the plot against him, find evidence of the Kremlin's involvement, and prepare to go public with their findings.
