Viewers have been given a first glimpse at Netflix's musical adaptation of Matilda ahead of the film's exclusive release in cinemas in Ireland and the UK this December.

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical is based on the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical which itself was based on the writer's 1988 novel.

The film is directed by Matthew Warchus who also directed the stage production of Matilda The Musical.

It stars Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson as formidable headteacher Miss Trunchbull, Bond star Lashana Lynch as kind-hearted Miss Honey and newcomer Alisha Weir in the title role.

Meanwhile, acclaimed actors Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough play Matilda's self-obsessed parents in the film.

Screenwriter Dennis Kelly has adapted Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical from the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

Matilda was previously adapted for the screen in 1996 and starred Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito, Pam Ferris and Embeth Davidtz.

The original film was critically acclaimed but flopped at the box office.

Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical is exclusively released in cinemas across Ireland and the UK on 2 December.

Netflix will release the film across the world [excluding Ireland and the UK] during the holiday season.
