UK sludge-metal four-piece Sail have released their new single, Emotion Motional Ocean. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
Formed in 2016, Sail draw influence from modern sludge, post-rock and grunge movements while bringing in elements of psychedelia and synth pop.
Speaking about the single, vocalist and lyricist Tim Kazer says, "You know the end of Pinocchio with the whale? Monstro, I think.
"I went back and watched a clip and Geppetto will not stop talking about dying. Like I don't think there was a single person who made that film thinking `this one’s for the kids’!
"Emotions can be that way sometimes though, like being eaten alive. That’s what Emotion Motional Ocean is. One big alt rock emotional monster munch."
Tell us three things about yourself?
Hi! I'm Tom and I play drums for Sail. I have a book on death metal out later this year, and my elbow was in an episode of Channel 4 drama Skins.
How would you describe your music?
Recently we've been exploring some new influences - it's a little less sludge metal and more alt rock. It's gloomy but with big summery hooks, like Joy Division at the beach.
Who are your musical inspirations?
As a band we're listening to a lot of grunge, alt rock and noise rock. Personally, for this release I've tried to channel Adam Betts from Three Trapped Tigers and Mastodon's Brann Dailor.
What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?
The first live show I remember going to was Busted with McFly supporting, which was very metal. The first album I remember buying was Celtic Frost's Monothiest, which was much louder and a little more than my tiny child brain could handle.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Right now, I'm listening to a lot of Sonic Youth, particularly Incinerate. I love how much they can do with a simple structure and very few lyrics, and I like how it disintegrates at the end. It is a tune.
Favourite lyric of all time?
I'm a big Mogwai guy, and when I feel glum I like to listen to Blues Hour and wallow in misery. "Train lines/ going nowhere/no destination found" is an excellent lyric for moping (especially on an actual train).
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Clutch's Cypress Groove - it's a big summer jam, for the good times.
Where can people find your music/more information?
We're on Spotify and Bandcamp as Sail, on Facebook as Sail Band, on Twitter and Instagram as @thebandsail and TikTok as @thebandsailuk - come and hang out and we'll share pictures of all the cool dogs we meet.
