Cruise's passing was announced by her husband, the author Edward Grinnan. The singer had announced in 2018 that she was suffering from the autoimmune disease lupus.

"She left this realm on her own terms," Grinnan wrote on Facebook. "No regrets. She is at peace.

"I played her [the B-52's song] Roam during her transition. Now she will roam forever. Rest in peace, my love."

Cruise's working relationship with Twin Peaks co-creator David Lynch began when she was recommended by composer Angelo Badalamenti for work on Lynch's 1986 film Blue Velvet. Their collaboration, Mysteries of Love, introduced film fans to Cruise's talents.

She went on to work with Lynch and Badalamenti on her 1989 debut album, Floating into the Night, from which Falling is taken.

In 1990, Cruise came to wider attention when Twin Peaks premiered on television with an instrumental version of Falling as its theme.

She had a cameo role as a singer in the series while the vocal and instrumental versions of Falling both appeared on the soundtrack album, alongside other Cruise songs.

Falling gave Cruise a 1990 chart hit when it was released on the back of Twin Peaks' success. She worked again with Lynch and Badalamenti on the soundtrack for the 1992 film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and, 25 years later, appeared in season three of the series in 2017.

Cruise was also guest vocalist on tour with the B-52's for a number of years in the 1990s. A collaborator with many electronic acts over the course of her career, her last album, My Secret Life, was released in 2011.
