Irish/UK duo Morning Midnight have released their new song Paradise. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
Speaking about the song, Jordan Scott and Jess Pascal say, "Paradise is about the space between realising you need a relationship to end and the moment it actually happens.
"I remember the night when it hit me like it was yesterday, but the moments after are a lot harder for me to piece together.
"I guess the realisation brings a clarity that's easy to remember, but this song is more interested in why it had to happen in the first place, which can take a lot more time to figure out."
Tell us three things about yourself?
We're a bedroom pop duo that consists of Jordan, who sings and writes the songs, and Jess, who produces and plays keys. When not making music, you’ll find us watching Studio Ghibli movies, crying to a Phoebe Bridgers record or cooking some obscure pasta dish from southern Italy. Jess originally started out as a dance producer before turning to the dark side and making sad pop songs.
How would you describe your music?
Catchy uplifting melodies, dreamy beat-laden production with some dark and introspective lyrics thrown in for good measure.
Who are your musical inspirations?
John Martyn, Frightened Rabbit, Shania Twain.
What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?
Jordan: I went with my parents to see David Byrne play when I was young, and the first record I ever bought with my own money was Revolver by The Beatles. Pretty sure my dad made me do it! What a first album to buy though.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Jess: My favourite song right now is definitely Anything But Me by MUNA. I honestly think they’re the coolest band in the world right now, any time I hear their songs I just want to drop everything and scream the words at the top of my lungs.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Jordan: "When it’s all gone, Something carries on, And it’s not morbid at all, Just when nature’s had enough of you, When my blood stops, Someone else’s will have not, When my head rolls off, Someone else’s will turn, And while I’m alive, I’ll make tiny changes to earth" - Head Rolls Off - Frightened Rabbit.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Jordan: Brothers on a Hotel Bed - Death Cab for Cutie. One of the most hypnotic and crushingly sad songs ever written so naturally I’d have it on repeat!
