London/Dublin based folk-pop artist, Rowlette has released her new song, The House Where We Used To Live. We asked her the BIG questions . . .
Speaking about the song, Rowlette says, "I love the idea of how a place can hold so many stories. Everyone's childhood home is filled with so many emotional triggers and memories. Although the song is quite specific to my life, I still think it will resonate with a lot of listeners."
She adds that writing the track was actually very straightforward "I literally just wrote about some of my strongest memories - it’s actually quite funny when you think about the seemingly innocuous things that stick out to you years later.
"My siblings definitely cringe a lot at some of the stories I’m sharing, but it gives me a good giggle when I’m singing it!"
Tell us three things about yourself?
I'm a singer and songwriter hailing from the west of Ireland. I love travelling and seeing new places. I’ve been to over 25 countries and studied/worked in four outside of Ireland. A lot of people find it weird, but my preference is to sleep with lights on, curtains open and an audio track of someone talking me to sleep!
How would you describe your music?
It’s mostly me telling stories to music! So lyrically driven music, set to natural instruments, like guitar and piano with some pop elements in there too. If I had to throw a label on it that would give you a sense of it, I’d say "folk-pop".
Who are your musical inspirations?
I’m obsessed with Orla Gartland and Sorcha Richardson . . . as two amazing Irish women in music they’re definitely my biggest inspirations right now.
What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?
This is quite funny, but one of the first gigs I ever went to / that I remember, was 21 Demands. It was in a little room in Sligo and there were only a few of us there. They then went on to become Kodaline and I’ve had the joy of seeing them in bigger venues since! They were brilliant all the way back then, too.
My first record was Avril Lavigne’s first album. I would estimate I’ve listened to it no less than one hundred thousand times. I still know every word. Classic.
What’s your favourite song right now?
As it Was by Harry Styles is living rent free in my head right now.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Coming in with the tough questions! I love Marina and the Diamonds song Savages - "Underneath it all, we're just savages, Hidden behind shirts, ties, and marriages, How can we expect anything at all? We're just animals still learning how to crawl". It’s very humbling because it’s very true, and reminds me to expect less from humankind sometimes. Another song I love is Dark Long Enough by Mundy, and the words "it will be dark long enough" are my new version of yolo!
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
This is a random one, but Anything but Ordinary by Avril Lavigne has been out most of my life and regularly shows up on my "most played" lists, so if I haven’t gotten sick of it by now, I think it’s pretty promising that I could listen to it for another 70 years!
Where can people find your music/more information?
The best way to stay in touch is through my mailing list, where I regularly send out unreleased tracks here. On social media though, you’ll find me everywhere @rowlettemusic and on all streaming platforms if you search Rowlette.
