Pick of the Day

We Own This City, 9.00pm, Sky Atlantic

Streaming on NOW

20 years after the first episode of The Wire debuted, creator David Simon returns with this cop drama, which paints a pretty ugly picture of US law enforcement.

Executive produced by Simon and long-time collaborator George Pelecanos, We Own This City is based on the book of the same name by Baltimore Sun journalist Justin Fenton.

This six-part series chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force. They make the cops in The Shield look more like Chief Wiggum and co in The Simpsons.

It examines the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.

The cast looks great, and includes Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead), Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country), and Jamie Hector (The Wire).

It’s certainly quite an alternative to Love Island.

The bottom two face a cook-off, which all the mentors then judge blind.
