Wexford-based pop act Sean McComish has released his new single, May. We asked him the BIG questions . . .
A native of Fethard-On-Sea, he launched his music career in 2015 with his first two shows in Whelan's and The Ruby Sessions followed by the release of his debut EP, The First Step.
He has performed with Calum Scott, Gavin James, and The Academic and performed on a charity single in aid of Pieta House.
Tell us three things about yourself?
Without getting into music related stuff, I'm a massive Marvel comic and movie fanatic! It all started with the 90's animated Spider-Man series, and with stuff now like Endgame bringing Avengers Assemble to life, it can be a seriously emotionally invested time for a lifelong fan! Secondly, I support Leeds United. It's always an exciting time as a Leeds supporter... unfortunately. And lastly, I'm a big PlayStation player and trophy hunter! I have a very addictive personality when it comes to games.
How would you describe your music?
I only recently discovered that Dance Pop is a genre. Not to be confused with radio friendly EDM! But apparently a lot of regular pop can be put under the Dance Pop bracket, so I would categorize it as that mostly! But some tracks have more elements of Funk-Pop.
Who are your musical inspirations?
My biggest musical inspiration would have to be Michael Jackson. An unfortunate controversial topic these days but I can't deny my musical roots. From the showmanship to the song writing, it's hard to not be inspired when watching his live show. Something I'll be forever regretful having not witnessed in person. Another big musical inspiration to me is Metal music. It's something I've adored since I was a kid, and although it's not obvious in my original music, the inspiration is definitely there.
What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?
The first ever proper concert I attended was S Club 7 at The Point when I was six! Funnily enough, I think I'd appreciate that more now! And the first CD I ever bought was Music and Me by Michael Jackson. Although that was actually bought for me. I can't recall what the first one I bought myself was.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Watcher in the Sky by Ghost. There's something just so cool about it. It's a very 80's metal/Ozzy Osbourne vibe, reminiscent of something from a soundtrack of an 80's horror movie!
Favourite lyric of all time?
Although possibly not my favourite lyric of all time, it's the first one that popped into my head! "When did the walking apes decide nuclear war was now the only solution for them keeping the score?" from a song called The Stage by Avenged Sevenfold. Lyrically and musically, a masterfully written nine-minute song about humanity's failure to learn from history.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Without thinking too hard, it would probably have to be 24k Magic by Bruno Mars. I never fail to immediately feel better whenever I hear it come on anywhere in public. And because of the music video, it always reminds me, and drummer Darren, of our favourite place to ever exist, Las Vegas. From the first to the last second of that song, when I close my eyes, I'm back on the strip. Anyone we know who's reading this, are currently rolling their eyes, as we NEVER shut up about it.
Where can people find your music/more information?
All the usual places! Listen on Spotify or Apple Music (and also the rest for anyone who uses them). And if you want to keep updated about upcoming stuff, head to Facebook and Instagram. I'm on pretty much everything but those are my go-to.
