BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has revealed live on air that she is engaged.

The happy news was shared with viewers during Kirkwood's live link from the Chelsea Flower Show on Monday morning.

"I'm a little bit concerned about you this morning," said BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent in the studio. "I don't know how you're managing to stand up with that giant rock on your left hand, Carol!"

Laughing and showing off the ring, Kirkwood replied: "Oh, that one! Thank you, Sal. It is rather nice - I got engaged!"

"Congratulations from all of us," said Nugent. "It's the happiest news. We are so, so delighted. Congratulations. Can we confirm to the nation what's happened?"

"Yes!" laughed Kirkwood. "I think you just have, Sal! Yes, I got engaged. We got engaged when we were on holiday. So it's lovely news and we're both thrilled. So thank you!"

"We're all thrilled," said co-presenter Jon Kay. "We're all so chuffed for you, Carol. On behalf of all the team here and everybody watching, I'm sure. Absolutely delighted."

Kirkwood told the hosts that no date had been set, but that she was looking at the flowers on display at Chelsea for ideas.

Kirkwood later posted on Twitter: "I have just been reading through all your lovely tweets. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am really touched … and very happy!!"

In an interview with Prima Magazine last June, Kirkwood said: "I don't want to say too much about my boyfriend, but I will say that he is very kind and very funny - he's always making me laugh. And extremely handsome, as well.

"He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic - it's 2.45am and he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work. That, to me, is worth a million red roses.

"He is the best thing that's ever happened to me, without a shadow of a doubt."

Kirkwood was previously married to her ex-husband Jimmy Kirkwood for 18 years. They split in 2008.
