Derry Girls viewers were left in floods of tears after the season three finale featured an unexpected, heartbreaking twist.

The finale of the hit comedy aired on Channel 4 on Tuesday night, with a bonus extended episode set to air on Wednesday.

The episode had plenty of laughs as the gang prepared to head off to a Fatboy Slim concert.

The season three finale expertly weaved laughter and tears

However, events took an unexpected turn when Clare (Nicola Coughlan) discovered that her father had been taken to hospital after suffering an aneurysm.

In the final scenes of the episode, we see the characters gather at Clare's side at his funeral.

Clare received some devastating news in the finale

The twist took viewers by surprise, with many praising writer/creator Lisa McGee for conveying the poignant moments in life as well as the humorous.

Many took to Twitter to share their thoughts and emotions on the final episode.

A stand-alone special episode will air on Wednesday night, set around the time of the Good Friday Agreement vote.

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee said: "Like all the very best 90s bands, I couldn’t resist ending our farewell tour with an encore for our loyal fans.

"I’m delighted to say we’ll be returning for one extended special – airing in the same week as our final episode.

"The special deals with the historic and momentous Good Friday Agreement vote, which coincides with the gang's coming of age, they enter adulthood just as Northern Ireland embarks on a new future."
