Sammy Copley: "I write a lot about nostalgia, angst and heartbreak."

Irish singer/songwriter Sammy Copley has released his new single, To The Bone. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Sammy released his debut album Growing Pains earlier this year and made his debut with Tinpot Records last summer to celebrate Pride month with Marsha - his ode to Marsha P. Johnson.

Sammy just played a show in Dublin with Sondre Lerche and recently supported Maria Kelly at Whelan's of Dublin.

Tell us three things about yourself?

I'm from Dublin, I’ve been writing music since I was 14, and I’m the same height as Paul Simon.

How would you describe your music?

I’d like to think my music is some weird mix between '60s folk and ‘90s acoustic. I write a lot about nostalgia, angst and heartbreak.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Joni Mitchell, Gregory Alan Isakov, Radiohead, Phoebe Bridgers, Carole King, Leonard Cohen, ABBA, Janis Ian, Paul Simon . . . the list goes on! I also dream of being able to sing like Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald.

What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?

Florence + The Machine was the first gig I ever went to, which is a pretty great note to start on! The Staves were the opening act and I’ve been listening to them ever since. I think the first record I ever downloaded was probably The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance, in the very same month that they broke up. Still one of my favourite albums.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Cool Dry Place by Katy Kirby.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Impossible question! Maybe "there but for the grace of you go I" from Kathy’s Song by Simon & Garfunkel, or "remember those who win the game lose the love they sought to gain" from At Seventeen by Janis Ian.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A Song For You by Donny Hathaway.

Where can people find your music/more information?

You can find me across social media as sammycopley. You can also find me and my new song To The Bone on streaming services, under Sammy Copley.
