What's on? 10 top TV and streaming tips for Saturday

Miles Davis
Miles Davis

Tonight there's a look at iconic musician Miles Davis, Saturday night fun with Jennifer Zamparelli, Ant & Dac, and Oti Mabuse – as well as some cracking movies, and a tribute to comic legend June Whitfield . . .

Pick of the Day

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, 10.30pm, BBC Two

Here's yet another superb piece of work from PBS.

It's a documentary profile of the legendary jazz bandleader, horn player and innovator Miles Davis.

His restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms made him a star, but also made him a rather difficult individual to live with.

In music and in life, Davis shied away from the status quo, and when he thought his work came to represent a new convention, he changed it again.

Featuring studio out-takes, archive footage and photos and Davis's own words, as well as contributions from many friends and colleagues.

Don’t Miss

Home Advantage, 8.45pm, RTÉ One

Season two of the family quiz hosted by Jennifer Zamparelli continues.

The drill – in case you don’t know is that one player from each of three teams of two adults and two children is present in the studio, while the rest of their family at home are called upon at key moments.

They try to battle through three rounds to get the chance to win the top prize of €10,000.

Britain's Got Talent, 8.00pm, Virgin Media One

Ant and Dec host as more awe-inspiring and showstopping performers take to the stage at the London Palladium Theatre.

Some are there for the craic, some are there because they want to make a name for themselves – but all try to impress judges David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell (below) and secure their place in the live semi-finals.

Romeo & Duet, 7.00pm, Virgin Media One

Here’s the second episode of this daft (even for Saturday!) series that has to be seen to be believed.

Oti Mabuse (below) presents a dating show that uses the power of singing to help people find their ideal partners, with River, Zainab, Christian and Koby taking part this time.

Each of the singletons will be serenaded by up to four singers and if they like what they hear they make their way to the bottom of the stairs to choose their favourite, opening the door and locking in their choice before the performance comes to an end.

Each of the four new couples then compete to be crowned the winners by the studio audience and bag themselves a second date.

The Many Faces of June Whitfield, 11.55pm, BBC Four

The veteran (and much-loved) comedy actress tells the story of her career.

Terry Scott and June Whitfield

June Whitfield’s career path goes from her early days in the West End working with Noel Coward, her ill-fated Broadway debut and, with the help of rarely seen archive footage, her years of TV and radio performances.

She also offers an insight into her on-screen relationship with Terry Scott and the secret behind her continuing success.

With contributions by Sylvia Syms, Nicholas Parsons and June's daughter Suzy Aitchison.

Wogan: The Best Of, 11.10pm, BBC Four

The late and legendary broadcaster Terry Wogan takes another nostalgic look back at his self-titled chat show – this time focusing on celebrities from across the Atlantic.

They include Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis (below), Lee Marvin, Willie Nelson and Stevie Wonder, plus stars from the US soap operas Dallas and Dynasty.

Saturday Cinema

Out of Innocence, 10.00pm, RTÉ One

Based on the appalling Kerry Babies case of 1984, this drama stars Fiona Shaw and Alun Armstrong.

After being interrogated by the police, a young mother confesses to a crime she did not commit and is charged with murder.

Even though the science and evidence does not appear to stack up, she is pursued and ultimately committed to trial.

The case quickly sparks national outrage and the young mother finds herself the unwitting central figure in a stubborn contest of the individual versus the State.

Captain America: Civil War, 9.20pm, Channel 4

One of the better Marvel superhero adventures, starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson.

It’s far from happy campers with The Avengers as Captain America is propelled into conflict with his Avengers teammate Iron Man over a system of government control over their actions.

And it’s a situation made worse when an old friend is accused of being behind a terror attack.

As a cunning conspiracy surrounds them all, Captain America finds himself battling former allies, vengeful enemies, and new heroes on the block Black Panther and Spider-Man.

The Band Wagon, 12.10pm, BBC Two

Here’s an absolute treat early in the day. One of the greatest MGM musicals, only bettered by the incomparable Singing in the Rain and on a par with An American in Paris.

It stars Fred Astaire, Jack Buchanan and Cyd Charisse, with tunes such as the iconic (and comic) That's Entertainment, and Dancing in the Dark - which involves a magical dance routine from Fred and Cyd.

Then there’s the dance routine - a technicolor treat from Charisse and Astaire - that was a huge influence on Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal video.

The story involves a has-been Hollywood dancer and a pretentious producer who form an uneasy alliance to stage a song-and-dance spectacular.

But the latter's bizarre ideas soon spiral out of control, while the former loathes the ballerina cast opposite him.

Can the show be saved?

Family Flick

The BFG, 6.35pm, RTÉ One

Steven Spielberg's fantasy adventure based on Roald Dahl's book, starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill and Penelope Wilton.

An orphaned girl befriends a benevolent giant, who takes her off to a magical land, where they attempt to stop the man-eating creatures that are invading the human world.
