Flynn Marks has released his new single, Grow. We asked him the BIG questions . . .
Grow follows last year's release of Flynn’s Cold Comfort EP and continues his venture through the broader and more euphoric end of the pop spectrum.
Speaking about the new release, he says, "Grow looks back to the darkest of my days, and talks about a time where I felt lost, unstable and hopeless.
"This song’s a nod to anyone who currently feels like they’re stuck in the same cycles and patterns that they can’t seem to break, and hopefully it’ll go some way to show that if you’re fortunate enough to lean on the ones who love you and constantly search for things that make you happier, with enough practise you can pull yourself out of the mud and hope for better days ahead."
After being discovered at the age of five, Flynn was invited to join one of the world’s best youth choirs and began his classical training at the age of 10 and landed a place at the coveted Brit School at 16.
"Song-writing and performing is a therapeutic process for me, I write songs from the heart, he says. "Encapsulating raw honesty, feelings and experiences in my life. I have been influenced by a number of artists including Matt Corby, Damien Rice and Adele, Lady Gaga and The Black Crowes, all who helped me to craft my music and sound."
Tell us three things about yourself?
I was born and raised in London. Performing and writing songs has always been at the forefront of everything I do, and I recently discovered an absolute obsession with Daim bars.
How would you describe your music?
I'd describe my more recent music as hard hitting, emotionally fuelled lyrics that speak upon real life experiences. merged with beautiful - ear worm - choruses that will hopefully get stuck in your head for days! If I can connect with one person then my work here is done.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I was lucky to grow up on a huge mix of music which led to me finding inspiration across a multitude of genres. Adele, Rihanna, and Joss Stone definitely influenced my writing styles early on. Other incredible artists include Luke Combs, Ray Lamontagne and Matt Corby.
What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?
Not my first but I remember going to Isle of Wight Festival where I saw Queen and Adam Lambert live in 2016. That definitely triggered my love for live music, and I wanted to see as many acts as possible from that point forward. As for the first record, I got Rihanna’s Loud on CD for Christmas when I was 11 and used to blast it in my bedroom constantly.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I haven’t stopped listening to Come Over by Jorja Smith ft Popcaan at the moment. The song is a whole vibe.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Well, funny you're the broken one, But I'm the only one who needed saving, 'Cause when you never see the light, It's hard to know which one of us is caving’ - Stay by Rihanna. Gives me shivers every time.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
Be Kind by Halsey’ ft Marshmello. There’s something so addictive with the song, I could listen to it for hours.
