Jack White marries onstage during hometown show

Jack White married fellow singer Olivia Jean during the opening show of his tour in their hometown of Detroit.

Friday night's nuptials at the Masonic Temple Theatre came after White proposed during a performance of the classic White Stripes track Hotel Yorba. Opening act Jean, who records on White's Third Man label, was singing backing vocals at the time.

She had been introduced by White as his girlfriend. "And I love her very much," he said.

The Detroit Free Press reports that as White neared the lyric "Let's get married", he stopped the song and a member of his entourage started filming on a phone.

"I've got a little question for you, Olivia Jean. Will you marry me?" asked White.

A teary Jean signalled yes and they finished the "Let's get married" line and the song, with White then carrying his fiancée off the stage.

They returned for the wedding ceremony, with Third Man label boss Ben Swank presiding and White and Jean's bass players serving as best man and maid of honour. Also joining the couple onstage were White's mother and Jean's father.

White was previously married to his White Stripes bandmate Meg White and model Karen Elson.

He has just released his new album, Fear of the Dawn.
