EastEnders has promised fireworks from the off as Sam Mitchell returns to Walford this month.

The character is the daughter of Peggy and sister to Phil and Grant Mitchell. She has been involved in numerous memorable storylines including being caught up in the death of Dirty Den and having an affair with Jack Branning.

Releasing photos of Sam's first moments back in E20, the BBC said: "Trouble is on its way to Albert Square as the notorious Sam Mitchell (played by Kim Medcalf) returns to her old stomping ground.

"It doesn't take long for Sam to ruffle some feathers and reignite old feuds - but why is she really back in Walford?"

Fans are being kept in suspense as to why Sam is back

Sam Mitchell first came to Albert Square in 1990 and was originally played by Danniella Westbrook.

Medcalf later took on the role from 2002 until she departed in 2005, with Westbrook also returning to portray Sam for a stint in 2009 and last appearing on screens in 2016.

Speaking earlier this year, Medcalf said she was "thrilled" to reprise her role as Sam.

"She's a brilliant character and I can't wait to get back in the Square this spring and work with the amazing cast of both familiar and new faces," she added.

EastEnders airs on RTÉ One and BBC One on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
