Behind the music - Brother Josh

Brother Josh

Dublin duo Brother Josh have released their new single, Crawl Back. We asked front man and guitarist Josh Bass the BIG questions . . .

Speaking about how the track came about, he says, "The absence of work made the lockdowns a difficult time for musicians. Apart from the lack of income.

"Most felt cut adrift by the absence of that magical connection between musicians and fans in the live context."

However, working with the Garage Band app inspired him to find his song writing voice and his cousin, Daz Bass, joined the project before noted Bulgarian Yanko Genov helped pull it all together in the studio.

Josh says, "I'm determined to take this project all the way. I’m really excited by the material I’ve written and can’t wait to get it all out there and get back to playing live again."

Tell us three things about yourself?

Josh Bass

Well despite my self-proclaimed incredible balance, I'm prone to taking the occasional spill.

I’d love to know what it’s like to be a tree.

I seem to derive an alarming amount of pleasure from completing monotonous tasks in video games.

How would you describe your music?

Funky disco psycho pop

Who are your musical inspirations?

Dylan, The Beatles, Bowie, Tom Waits, and anybody who hula hoops.

What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?

First gig: The 4 of Us at a festival in Longford, possibly 2002. First Record: Gorillaz debut called erm Gorillaz.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Tom Waits - Burma Shave.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"Disillusioned words like bullets bark, As human gods aim for their mark, Made everything from toy guns that spark, To flesh-coloured Christs that glow in the dark, It's easy to see without looking too far, That not much is really sacred". Bob Dylan - It's Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding).

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Barbie Girl by Aqua. I figure I’d be doing any song I like a disservice by subjecting it to so many listens and who knows, maybe I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world.
