Behind the music - Peter Richardson

Peter Richardson: coasting ahead
Peter Richardson: coasting ahead

Dublin singer/songwriter Peter Richardson has released Coast, the first single from his forthcoming debut EP. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

After testing the waters with his original songs at a college open mic, Peter began properly recording his music at home in the summer of 2020 and released his debut single, The End of The World, the following October.

Peter has been working on his debut EP with Cork producer Cian Sweeney of 1000 Beasts.

Speaking about The Coast, Peter says, "The Coast isn't a place, it’s a feeling that is unique to us, a feeling we can get lost in. As the song rises and the music begins to swell, soulful lyrics carry us to the setting sun on the horizon, the day is drawing to a close and we are caught between what is behind and what could be ahead."

Tell us three things about yourself?

I’m a 22-year-old singer/songwriter from Dublin, I studied science in college and my debut EP is out this year!

How would you describe your music?

I guess you could say Indie folk or singer/songwriter, but I find it hard to put a label on things. I try to make every song different, to be in its own world entirely. Most importantly I just try to make music that will make you feel something.

Who are your musical inspirations?

There’s too many to name but some of my favourites are Hozier, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Lorde and Ben Howard. I’m also massively influenced by the music I grew up listening to with my dad, great Irish artists like Paul Brady, Declan O’Rourke and U2. In the past year Fleet Foxes have definitely been my biggest inspiration, Robin Pecknold’s writing is sensational and never fails to blow me away.

What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?

I went to see U2 in Croke Park with my family on their 360º tour. Although I was still pretty young I’ll never forget the energy there, it was incredible!

I think the first CD I ever bought myself was Two Door Cinema Club’s debut Tourist History. To this day I think every track on there is a belter and it’s still pulled off the shelf regularly.

What’s your favourite song right now?

It’s gotta be Wash by Bon Iver. I’ve fallen back into another big Bon Iver phase lately and every time a new track just absolutely hooks me, it’s such a beautiful song and it makes me feel like spring is coming.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"Who puts the rainbow in the sky? Who lights the stars at night? Who dreamt up someone so divine? Someone like you and made them mine?" Galileo by Declan O’Rourke.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

This is such a tough one! Off the bat I’d say probably Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes. It’s a beautiful exploration of trying to find your place in the world, and always reassures me that it’s ok not to have all the answers, and that everything will be alright. It’s gotta be either that or Cucurucu by Nick Mulvey, I just couldn’t leave that one out.
