Chris de Burgh has spoken about the joy of being a grandfather, joking that it's "mayhem" when his young grandchildren come to visit.
Speaking on RTÉ One's Today show on Wednesday, the singer-songwriter opened up about his daughter Rosanna Davison's emotional journey to motherhood. She suffered 14 miscarriages before welcoming daughter Sophia by gestational surrogacy in 2019. The next year, she gave birth to twin boys Hugo and Oscar.
He said: "She had multiple miscarriages and was told she couldn't have children and they went the surrogate route, incidentally through Kiev and there are people there now trapped waiting for their babies. It would make your heart break.
"And then a year and a half ago she suddenly said 'I'm pregnant, identical twins'. Of course we all burst into tears."
The singer-songwriter said he's been busy keeping up with the "little sweethearts".
"They come to my house every weekend and when they leave it looks like there's been a burglary. The little lads are now running around with their big sister. It's mayhem", he laughed.
During the interview with presenters Dáithí Ó Sé and Maura Derrane, de Burgh also spoke about writing his hit song Lady in Red, how he knew it was special while he was recording it, and his love for the late singer Meatloaf.
"I did 14 shows with Meatloaf all over Europe and he always had the dressing room beside me. [He was] a charming, lovely, lovely man and I'm so sorry he's passed."
The Today show airs on RTÉ One, weekdays at 3.30pm.
