Peaky Blinders' return date is confirmed

It has been announced that the sixth and final season of the Cillian Murphy-starring Peaky Blinders will premiere on BBC One on Sunday, 27 February at 9:00pm.

The announcement was made on a mural in Peaky Blinders' home base of Birmingham on Tuesday.

There will be six episodes in the sixth season.

Murphy, who plays crime boss Tommy Shelby, will be joined by co-stars Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby Jr), Finn Cole (Michael Gray), Stephen Graham (no details on character), Tom Hardy (Alfie Solomons), Sophie Rundle (Ada Thorne) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Gina Gray), among others.

Irish director Anthony Byrne (Ripper Street, Love/Hate) is once again behind the lens. Both he and star Murphy are among the executive producers on the show.

Murphy has said the final season of Peaky Blinders will be a tribute to his late friend and co-star Helen McCrory, who played matriarch Polly Gray. McCrory died last April at the age of 52. She had been diagnosed with cancer.

Speaking to US entertainment publication Variety, Murphy said: "I think the whole series is really in tribute to her and to honour her.

"Her presence and her character's presence are very much still felt in the series, and it is very much part of Tommy's journey in the season."

"I just hope that the show will live up to her memory and our memory of her," he added.

Past seasons of Peaky Blinders are available on the RTÉ Player.
