Liam Neeson has joked that accepting the lead role in Seth MacFarlane's Naked Gun reboot could "finish" his career or take it in another direction.

Family Guy and Ted creator MacFarlane has yet to officially announced the film, but Ballymena man Neeson has said that he has been approached about taking up the role of bungling detective Frank Drebin, who was played by Leslie Nielsen in the original movies.

"I’ve been approached by Seth MacFarlane and Paramount Studios to maybe resurrect the Naked Gun films," Neeson told People (the TV Show!).

"It’ll either finish my career or bring it in another direction," he added. "I honestly don’t know."

Neeson has previously starred in MacFarlane’s A Million Ways To Die In The West and has made cameo appearances in Ted 2 and an episode of the director’s sci-fi satire The Orville.

The actor has carved out a new career in action films such as Taken and Non-Stop in recent years but has hinted that he may be moving on from action roles.

"I turn 70 this year, so I’m still getting away with it," he has said.

"I think the action movies will draw to a close, they have to. Audiences aren’t stupid, you know. They’re gonna go, 'Oh, f***, this guy, Liam Neeson. He’s got to be 71, 72, 73…’ I’ll stop at some stage."
