Generation Dating is a brand new show that's aiming to show that age is no barrier when two people are looking for love.

The series kicks off tonight (Wednesday) on Virgin Media One with a full bingeable box set drop on Virgin Media Player.

The concept's simple: take two perfect strangers - one older and one younger - task each with finding the other a date. And there you have it. But there's much more going on when you look a little deeper.

The opening episode features 81-year-old Tony, a former Teddy Boy who lives alone in Dublin. He's a widower after the recent loss of his wife, with whom he shared a half-century of married bliss.

Isabel Fernandes is paired with Tony. She's a 22-year-old from Cork, who's studying and working as a social housing officer in Dublin. She is half Irish on her mum's side and half Indian/Portuguese on her dad’s side.

She sees her participation as being much bigger than just a young woman looking for love.

"For myself, being gay as well, the reason I wanted to do it is that I don’t think that there’s enough representation within these shows", she says. "And in all those reality TV shows, there’s not enough for gay people - gay men, gay women, and all the queer community in general.

"So it was nice to be able to put ourselves out there," she adds. "Especially with the older generation because - I suppose - especially in Ireland they can be seen as a traditional group of people.

"They can come and be open-minded, and share their experience. I think that’s really important."

As well as representing the gay community, Isabel also feels she is providing a platform for Irish people with a similar background to hers.

"And also, on the other side of that, there’s me being mixed-race," sh says. "I don’t think there’s enough representation. So to take the two elements and put it out there, make people more aware.

"I think it’s a really nice concept."
