Domhnall Gleeson is to play a serial killer opposite Steve Carell in the new US limited series The Patient.

Entertainment trade publication the Hollywood Reporter says the 10-part series for the FX channel stars Carell as Alexandar Strauss, "a psychotherapist who finds himself held prisoner by a serial killer (Gleeson) with an unusual request: curb his homicidal urges".

"Unwinding the mind of this man while also dealing with the waves of his own repressed troubles creates a journey for Alexander that's perhaps as treacherous as his captivity," the synopsis adds.

Steve Carell will also serve as executive producer on The Patient

The Patient has been co-written by Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, the Emmy winners behind The Americans, who will serve alongside Carell as executive producers.

The cast also includes Linda Emond (Succession), Laura Niemi (This Is Us) and Andrew Leeds (Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist).

Production on The Patient's 10 half-hour episodes began this week.
