Grey's Anatomy has been renewed for a 19th season after a new deal was reached with Ellen Pompeo to return as lead character Meredith Grey.

The Hollywood Reporter says Pompeo will be joined by fellow original cast members Chandra Wilson (Dr Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr (Dr Richard Webber) for the 19th season, which will air later this year and in 2023. Pompeo also serves as an executive producer on the longest-running primetime medical drama on US television.

Commenting on the series' renewal by US network ABC, Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes said: "I couldn't be more excited that we get to keep telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season.

"This is a true testament to Krista Vernoff [showrunner], the cast, the crew and all the writers who keep the audience on the edge of their seat week after week. And it would not be possible without the generations of incredible fans who have supported Grey's Anatomy for so many years."

Dana Walden, Chairman of Entertainment at Walt Disney Television, which makes the show, said: "We have enormous faith in Shonda, Krista Vernoff, Ellen Pompeo and the entire creative team to unlock new, untold stories that will continue to focus on modern medicine, tackle the issues that shape the world around us, and resonate deeply with loyal fans for years to come."
