There’s more chat show fun and games with Tommy Tiernan, music docs on Elvis Presley and David Bowie, the return of Celebrity Catchphrase and some must-watch movies . . .
Pick of the Day
The Tommy Tiernan Show, 9.35pm, RTÉ One
It still feels odd to choose a chat show as Pick of the Day when you don’t know who’s on the guest list – but it’s all about Tommy Tiernan, isn’t it?
After decades as a comedian, he’s found a remarkable niche for himself with this improvised chat show where neither the presenter nor the viewers are told the identity of the guests in advance.
With the comedian in the dark about who he will be interviewing until they walk out to greet him, anything can happen - especially if Tommy genuinely doesn't have a clue who they are.
Don’t Miss
Elvis: The Rebirth of the King, 9.10pm, BBC Two
When Elvis Presley (above) began performing in Las Vegas in 1969, many believed that was the end of his career, especially after the excitement of his '68 Comeback Special.
This documentary follows his time in the gambling capital and argues that it was a musical renaissance for the King, who reached his peak as both as a singer and performer - jumpsuits and all.
David Bowie and the Story of Ziggy Stardust, 10.10pm, BBC Two
Jarvis Cocker narrates an insight into the singer-songwriter's creation of his glam-rock alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.
It reveals how his hairstyles, fashion sense, stage presentation and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars turned him into a major star.
Ziggy's instant success gave the impression that he was the perfectly-planned pop star, but, as the film reveals, it had been a momentous struggle for David Bowie to find the formula that would take him to the top.
Featuring contributions by Elton John, Marc Almond, Holly Johnson, Peter Hook and Jon Savage, it’s followed at 11.10pm by David Bowie at Glastonbury 2000, regarded as one of his greatest live performances.
The Perfect Morecambe & Wise, 7.40pm, BBC Two
More nostalgia with another selection of classic sketches and routines from the legendary comedy duo's shows.
Early on, Eric and Ernie (above) suffer a wardrobe malfunction, then team up for an unusual game of table football.
Later, Eric annoys Ernie by eating crisps in bed and Shirley Bassey experiences a few technical problems with the set while performing Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.
Around the World in 80 Days, 8.10pm, BBC Four
Not to be confused with the recent David Tennant-starring series, this is Michael Palin’s (below) real-life journey, first shown on BBC One back in 1989.
In this opening episode, Palin sets off from London en route to Italy for the first leg of his attempt to emulate the legendary adventures of Phileas Fogg.
After an overnight stay in Venice, the intrepid explorer helps the local refuse collectors before boarding the Espresso Egitto ferry bound for Alexandria.
