Festive five TV and streaming tips for New Year's Eve

Callan Kicks the Year, RTÉ One, 9.10pm
Callan Kicks the Year, RTÉ One, 9.10pm

There's tons of terrific telly tonight - though the live show from Dublin Castle's off - and here's a fistful for your consideration as 2021 makes way for 2022 . . .

Callan Kicks the Year, 9.10pm, RTÉ One

Oliver Callan rounds off the year with some much-needed laughs in a special edition of his comedy series.

Here he takes a satirical look at the past 12 months, reviewing stories from Zapponyism to the stuck Suez ship, and Dublin Bay South, the Olympics, TV drama Kin, and the US insurrection.

Let's face it – there are rich pickings to be had. It's been a mental year.

The Lost Daughter, Netflix

If you fancy completely ignoring the New Year’s Eve shenanigans, this is the place to go.

Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her directorial debut with this drama from a script she adapted from the novel by Elena Ferrante.

The Lost Daughter stars Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Mescal and Dagmara Dominczyk.

Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach.

Unnerved by their compelling relationship - and their raucous and menacing extended family - Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood.

An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.

Mrs Brown’s Boys New Year’s Special, 10.10pm, RTÉ One

Brendan O’Carroll and the gang are back with more Finglas-based fun to wrap up 2021.

Grandad's brother Micky is fresh out of prison and decides to stop by the house for a visit, but his family are soon suspicious when he asks for €5,000 to invest in a South African goldmine.

Winnie is inspired by Cathy's book to change the trajectory of her life, while the boys have a heart to heart.

The Graham Norton New Year’s Eve Show, 10.20pm, BBC One

Graham (below) presents his traditional end-of-year show, joined by guests Michael Sheen, appearing in Sky Cinema's Last Train to Christmas, Oscar-nominated Jessica Chastain, the star and producer of female spy film The 355.

British actor Claire Foy talks about quirky biopic The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, while Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage chats about playing Cyrano de Bergerac in Joe Wright's latest adaptation Cyrano.

Also:, while The Good Fight's Cush Jumbo reflects on her role in Harlan Coben drama Stay Close, comic Joe Lycett lightens the mood, promoting his UK tour More, More, More.

Plus, the Divine Comedy perform their classic Something for the Weekend and there are some final stories from the Big Red Chair to round off the year.

Jools’ Annual Hootenanny, 11.25pm, BBC Two

You might fancy ending 2021 by skipping between this long-established NYE night of music and chat and New Year’s Eve Countdown Show with Una Healy (11.45pm, RTÉ One).

Una's also co-hosting The Heart of Saturday Night Christmas Special (10.45pm, RTÉ One) with Loah, which includes performances and conversations with the likes of Mary Black, Nathan Carter, Aoife Ní Bhriain and Mick O'Brien.

Meanwhile Jools Holland welcomes in the New Year with the likes of Ed Sheeran (above), Gregory Porter, Lulu, Joy Crookes, Rag 'n' Bone Man, Yola, Vic Reeves, and Ruby Turner.

Plus, as is tradition, Jools will be counting the seconds down to midnight, before the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards play viewers into 2022.
