As Fair City's Melanie prepares for a busy Christmas, we caught up with actress Nyree Yergainharsian to get the lowdown on what to expect this festive season, and beyond.
How would you sum up Melanie's 2021 and what storyline did you enjoy the most?
Melanie found herself up against some parenting challenges this year - as there always are! Her son Alex is trying to carve a path for himself, but Melanie isn't convinced he's on the right track. She would love nothing more than to see him in college, but he is determined to go straight to work and manage Brewzers. I think her biggest challenge is letting go and relinquishing control of her now-grown-up son! I particularly enjoyed navigating this story with my on-screen family.
Melanie has a lot on her plate trying to organise an Armenian Christmas. Does she feel Mondo isn't being supportive enough?
Melanie and Mondo have a very good relationship - they have been through a lot together and, despite it all, have stayed strong all these years. Melanie can be a bit over-ambitious at times (making two full Christmas dinners at the same time!) and I think there is a part of her that knows it's more than is practically possible in many ways. Mondo helps to balance Melanie and, of course, the other way 'round too!

The whole family are pulled in every direction on Christmas Day. Is Melanie resentful at being left to do everything by herself?
Melanie wants a happy family, to be all together, and for everyone else to want the exact same thing! I don't think she's resentful, but she would like to have more together, family time.
What is the most important thing to Melanie this Christmas Day?
To be together with her family.
Do you think this storyline will resonate with a lot of viewers at home, particularly women who often take on the bulk of the domestic work?
I think it will really resonate with a lot of people who run the show at Christmas! There is often a lot of pressure on people to 'deliver' at Christmas time, which can be very stressful. I hope they also find, like Melanie, that the most important thing is simply the people around you.

Do you think Melanie will get her happy ever after in 2022? What would you like to see happen?
I would love for Melanie to have a great 2022! She deserves it in many ways. She is a very good, caring person. She is hugely involved in the community, looks after Ruth, works multiple jobs, tries her best to always better herself for her and for her family. I wonder is a wedding on the cards for her next year?!
