Belfast and western drama The Power of the Dog lead the film nominations with seven each. In the television categories, Succession leads the shortlist with five nominations.

Passing's Ethiopian-Irish star Negga is shortlisted alongside Co Monaghan's Balfe in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in the acclaimed racial drama.

The Golden Globes have been mired in controversy regarding diversity, sexism and ethics over the past year, with studios and PR firms boycotting the submission process and talent availability. US network NBC has decided not to air the 2022 awards ceremony.

The organiser of the awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, says it has undertaken a major reform process - with more work still to be done. It waived its submission criteria for award consideration following the studio boycott.

The winners will be announced in Beverly Hills on Sunday, 9 January. Belfast and West Side Story tie for the most nominations - 11 - for the Critics Choice Awards, which were also announced on Monday. That ceremony also takes place in the US on 9 January.

Belfast opens in Irish cinemas on Friday, 21 January. Passing and The Power of the Dog are available now on Netflix.
