Still picking up the pieces after the death of Denis and the cover-up that followed, Val Ahern's world is rocked once again when a stranger turns up on her doorstep

The stranger introduces himself as Finn, Denis’ estranged son and his existence is an unwelcome surprise for the family.

Abandoned to grow up in foster care in Britain, Finn wants to get to know his family but his appearance coincides with what seems to be an orchestrated campaign against the family, as each of the Ahern daughters has their lives targeted and exposed.

Speaking about the return of the show, which was filmed on the rugged coast of Co. Clare, Seána Kerslake, who plays Grace, said there is a lot more in store for the Aherns.

"If you thought there was drama and confusion in season one, there's going to be even more this time around for sure."

Her co-star Gemma-Leah Devereux, who plays Anna, added: "I think the arrival of Denis’s estranged son and whether he is who he says he is, and the Ahern sisters, well... there are a lot of twists and turns from the get-go."

Smother also stars Dervla Kirwan, Niamh Walsh, Justine Mitchell and Dean Fagan.

Season 2 begins on 9 January on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player
