Big screen legend Sylvester Stallone has signed up for the first regular series role of his 52-year career as the lead in Kansas City - the new show from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire's Terrence Winter.

Entertainment trade publication the Hollywood Reporter says the new series for streaming service Paramount+ follows Sal (Stallone), "a New York mobster who's forced to relocate to present-day Kansas City, Missouri, and is faced with the task of re-establishing his Italian Mafia family in the Midwestern city".

"Sal encounters several surprising and unconventional characters as he forges a path to power," the Hollywood Reporter adds.

Stallone, Sheridan and Winter will be among the executive producers on Kansas City, with The Wolf of Wall Street Oscar nominee Winter serving as showrunner.

Before finding fame with 1976's Rocky, Stallone had guest roles in the television series Police Story and Kojak. He is currently filming The Expendables 4.
