Norwegian-Irish artist Tara Nome Doyle has released her new single, Snail I, ahead of her second album VÆRMIN which is due in January. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Commenting on the new single, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter says, "Snail I is about my experience of receiving the kind of love I didn't know I needed.

A slow kind of love, not the 'falling in love at first sight' kind but rather the one you tentatively let yourself sink deeper into every day. Teaching each other to be patient and brave enough to open to a new, shared understanding of life."

Doyle released her debut album Alchemy in 2020 and earlier this year she co-wrote a song with Isobel Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Emma) for the feature film Munich - The Edge Of War, which stars Jeremy Irons.

She can be seen performing the song in the film which is released this January.

Tell us three things about yourself?

I speak three languages fluently because my father is Irish and my mother is Norwegian, but I grew up in Berlin, Germany. I play the tuba. My middle name "Nome" (pronounced "No Me") is actually a place in Norway where a part of my family still runs a farm.

How would you describe your music?

Eerie, lyric-based art-pop? It's so difficult to define your own work, but I’d say that the overall concept often plays an important part in my music. My songs also always feel very cathartic and spiritual to me.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I think the two artists that shaped me the most were Susanne Sundfør and Damien Rice. I fell in love with lyrics when I first heard his album O and that love has been a driving force in my song writing ever since. Susanne Sundfør creates these epic soundscapes, intricate melodies and is so fearless with the use of her voice, which I always find very inspiring.

How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?

The one positive thing that has come from this past year has been collaborations. Musicians that would usually be busy touring were looking for new projects and this allowed me to meet and write with incredible artists like Isobel Waller-Bridge, Federico Albanese and Erol Sarp. Spending so much time doing the thing I love most - song writing - was actually also a big help with my mental health, which had definitely declined during the lockdown.

What's your favourite song right now?

I recently got to know the amazing Norwegian-German artist EERA and since then I’ve been listening to her debut record Reflection of Youth from which I particularly love the song Christine. It reminds me a bit of Sybille Baier.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Impossible to say! But the first one that comes to mind is: "Some flowers they grow where nothing else grows, Guess I was that flower to you" - Susanne Sundfør.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Till Till Tara. It's a mystical, melancholic Norwegian folk song that my mother used to sing for me and my sister at bedtime.
