Kildare folk singer songwriter Lisa Gorry has released her new EP, It Was You (and Me). We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Speaking about the about the EP, she says: "We recorded all the tracks for the EP in layers - guitar and vocals first, then strings, then drums and it was such a wonderful process to watch the songs develop.

"The song Home really came alive when the drums went in - it took on a different energy than I'd ever managed to create before, and I remember blubbering tears of pure excitement when I heard the rough take!"

Lisa has been releasing music since 2019, with her first single Parts, and independently released her first EP, Is It Me?, in October 2021.

Tell us three things about yourself?

Gorry: Mellow in a meadow

Aw god, these questions are always tricky! I’m left-handed but play guitar right-handed, I studied law before becoming a teacher and I developed a chocolate-covered Oreo obsession during lockdown.

How would you describe your music?

I would think genre wise, my music could be best described as pop-folk, which seems to be a genre on the up and up, but I’ve always felt that singer-songwriter best fits when trying to explain my music to people; it’s a description they can relate to straight away. It’s lyrics and emotions heavy.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I grew up listening to all the big Irish heads - Bell X1, The Frames, Lisa Hannigan, Cathy Davey, Mick Flannery. Their lyricism and the way they could capture such a variety of human emotions really had an impact on me.

What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?

Bon Jovi in Punchestown was my first gig - I bought a cowboy hat at it and all, when I was 15/16. I can’t remember the first record I bought but the predominant early records that I received were Britney Spears’ Oops I Did It Again, Samantha Mumba’s Gotta Tell You and Avril Lavigne’s Let Go.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I cannot get enough of Angel Olsen’s Shut Up Kiss Me. Also, Phoenix by Big Red Machine.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"I was salted by your hunger, but you’ve gone and lost your appetite" From Lisa Hannigan’s Little Bird.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

This Must Be The Place - Talking Heads.

Where can people find your music/more information?

My music is on the usual platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal, YouTube. Instagram is the best place then to keep up with everything else @lisagorrymusic. I’m also on Facebook @lisagorrymusic and Twitter @lisa_gorry.
