Pop and R `n' B artist Mia Yermeche has released her new single, Comfortable. We asked her the BIG questions . . .
The 19-year-old singer-songwriter from Bettystown, Co Meath says the pop anthem is based on personal experiences and tells a story of "one friend helping another in a toxic relationship after several red flags start cropping up".
Mia, who recently took part in Virgin Media One’s talent show The Big Deal, released her debut single Butterflies earlier this year and she counts Rihanna, Alicia Keys and Kehlani as some of her biggest musical influences.
Tell us three things about yourself?
I’ve been singing since the age of three. I loved singing musical theatre growing up as I attended The Little Duke Theatre in Drogheda. Looking back, putting on shows and performing is definitely one of my favourite memories from my childhood.
I loved English when I was in school, it was definitely my favourite subject. I think that definitely enriched my love for song-writing.
I am currently studying Marketing, Innovation and Technology in university. I am only in my first year but so far, I am loving it!
How would you describe your music?
My music is absolutely ME! Honestly, I love all genres of music and I wouldn't really be able to confine my music to just one box/category, but I mostly stick between the genres of R 'n’ B and pop. A Lot of the time my music has a message and a story whether it be super deep and heavy or something very casual and light. I write about things that many of us will go through and experience throughout life and so hopefully many people will be able to relate and resonate to my music and my lyrics.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Snoh Aalegra and Mahalia! I think I’m also very inspired at times by the music I was surrounded by growing up. My grandad would always be playing the likes of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra and that definitely influenced my liking for jazz music!
What was the first gig you ever went to and the first record you ever bought/downloaded?
The first gig I ever went to was The X Factor Live Tour in 2013! I used to be obsessed with the show and watch it every weekend with my family. Loud by Rihanna was the first album I bought on iTunes!
What’s your favourite song right now?
Ghost Town - Kanye West.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Much success to you, even if you wish me the opposite, Sooner or later, we’ll see who the prophet is" - Nas (Nas Is Like).
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
This question is impossible, but one song that I can never get tired of is definitely Tears Dry On Their Own by Amy Winehouse!
Where can people find your music/more information?
My music is available on all platforms! You can keep up with me on my Instagram, Twitter or TikTok all @miayermeche.
