Former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley has revealed she is expecting her second child with husband Tom Pitfield.

The couple, who are already parents to six-year-old son Alfie, are set to welcome a baby girl in April next year.

In an interview with Hello! magazine, Tyldesley said they are "absolutely elated" with the news.

"We feel so lucky. When we found out, I just burst into tears," she told the publication.

The actress said her husband became emotional when they found out they were expecting a girl.

"Tom was in bits when we found out we are having a little girl. He has suddenly gone all mushy. I'm sure she will have him wrapped around her little finger," she revealed.

The Strictly Come Dancing star said the news is even more special as she has struggled with a hormonal imbalance that caused her body to mimic the symptoms of pregnancy in recent years.

"I took so many tests as I was convinced I was actually pregnant, but in fact my body was just mimicking a pregnancy," she said.

"So this time, even when my stomach was a bit swollen, I just thought: 'Oh hormonal imbalances again.'"

Tyldesley said she has been suffering from "terrible insomnia" at night and has been diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, the debilitating condition also suffered by Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, that causes severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

"It is not like morning sickness as you feel sick all day," she said. "It is the same thing Kate had, although I have not been as extreme as her. I was put on medication and that has been a godsend as I feel so much better."

Tyldesley and Pitfield welcomed their first child, Alfie, in 2015 and tied the knot the following year.
