Ed Sheeran has revealed he has recorded a festive tune with Elton John which is set for release this Christmas.

Sheeran, who is set to play Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Belfast as part of his + - = ÷ x (Mathematics) Tour next year, is hoping to top the charts this Christmas with a brand new track he has recorded with Elton John.

During an interview with Dutch radio station NPO Radio 2, the Shape of You hitmaker said that John asked him to collaborate last year after he discovered that his own Christmas song Step Into Christmas had hit the UK Top 10 for the first time ever.

"Elton rang me on Christmas Day to say Merry Christmas. Elton rings me almost every single day," Sheeran explained.

"He said, 'Step Into Christmas is Number 6 in the charts! I want to do another Christmas song – will you do it with me?'"

Sheeran went on to reveal that he initially didn't think the song suited him but he soon changed his mind.

He said: "You don't know if you'll still be there tomorrow, everything can change overnight. I may not be here tomorrow. Why shouldn't I grab this opportunity?"

Of what to expect from the song, Sheeran said: "It's just me and him. It’s great."
