HBO has released the first trailer for House of The Dragon, the new Game of Thrones prequel which is due to air in 2022.

The new series stars Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, and Emma D'Arcy and is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and follows the reign of dragon-riding Targaryen family (Daenerys Targaryen's ancestors).

It is adapted from George R.R. Martin's 2018 book Fire & Blood Vol. 1.

Considine stars as King Viserys Targaryen, Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, D'Arcy stars as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower in the new drama.

HBO have also revealed that Savannah Steyn, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan and Theo Nate have also joined the cast as members of the Velaryon family.

Fans of George RR Martin's books will know the Targaryen family becomes embroiled in a deadly civil war.

House Of The Dragon is one of many Game Of Thrones TV projects HBO has in the works, while a stage show for the West End is also in production.

Game Of Thrones was a pop culture phenomenon during its eight-season run but its critically panned finale in 2019 left a sour taste in the mouths of many fans.

The trailer for House of The Dragon was revealed as streaming service HBO Max prepares for its European launch on October 26.
